Charitable Giving

Red Bird Farms is eager to feed the needs of those can use it most. Therefore, in an effort to give back, we’ve partnered with many charitable organizations. After all, Red Bird Farms firmly believes in giving back: as Thomas Fuller says, “Charity begins at home, but should not end there.”

A few of the organizations we've worked with include: Pro Start, Phoenix Children's Hospital, and the City of Englewood Police Department.  Of course, this only begins to scratch the surface.  Stay in touch with our community partnerships by following us on social media.  If you're interested in a partnership, please email Red Bird at info@redbirdfarms.com.

Education

The foundation for a strong community lies in education. As Red Bird firmly subscribes to this theory, we work hard to educate people on the Red Bird product and process. If you're an educational institution interested in partnering with Red Bird, please reach out at info@redbirdfarms.com.

A Family Company

Red Bird Farms is a privately held family company that has been under the same ownership for over 20 years.  Family values are the center of Red Bird's philosophy for a successful business.

Since Red Bird’s inception, the company’s strength has always been centered on people. High employee retention has created a strong work environment. 70% of Red Bed Bird employees have been here for eight years or more. In production, all our supervisors have been on staff for 12 years or more. And finally, Red Bird’s longest lasting employee has been here for 31 years! We believe this longevity reflects a family oriented company that values its staff above all else. A skilled and experienced team creates the best product.

Ultimately, this emphasis on people is the trademark of today’s operations. Red Bird Farms is very progressive in our product line but we remain consistent with the personnel. This powerful team has moved Red Bird towards some very innovative changes.

Mareo Torito was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan. He was the middle child of three boys. Mareo’s father made a modest living as a writer on politics and economics, but he ultimately struggled to make ends meet. As the country suffered from a deep post-war depression, the Toritos often struggled to put food on the table. His poor and hungry childhood simply made Mareo more ambitious. He often spent afternoons searching behind the laundry mat for loose coins that he saved in a piggy bank; these savings were meant to one day “buy America.”

This brazen goal was typical for a boy who, from the very beginning, had entered the world with a determination to do things his own way. His name, which means “strange birth,” was given to him after he was close to a month late on arrival. Just like his birth, Mareo’s life has been unconventional. He attended Meiji University where he studied French literature. In order to pay his way through college, Mareo began working for the restaurant chain, Yoshinoya Beef Bowl.

This company later sent him to the United States. In the US, Mareo worked at slicing beef for export back to Japan. Around this time, he met his future wife, Maylis. An immigrant as well, Maylis and Mareo shared lofty goals and humble roots. The pair made their living slicing beef, then owning and running a restaurant, and ultimately buying Red Bird Farms. Mareo applied his hard earned experience as a butcher and restauranteur into his next project of chicken.

Today, Mareo and Maylis live in Denver, Colorado. Their son runs the family restaurants, while their daughter is learning the ropes as an apprentice at Red Bird Farms. Although Mareo loves to visit Japan, his life in the US has given him great satisfaction. And in the end, if he can’t “buy America,” it may be just as wonderful to be a part of it.

Meet Ruben

Many employees at Red Bird have been here for a long time, but Ruben takes the cake: he’s been a part of the Red Bird family for 31 years! When he was only 16 years old, Ruben worked hard in the saws department. After gaining experience there, Ruben moved to the deboning table where he became an expert with a knife. 31 years later, Ruben is the production manager. He supervises over 50 employees who respect him for his longevity, knowledge, and mild manner.

As Ruben is an incredibly dedicated employee, he’s also a loyal family man. Ruben is married with three kids and one granddaughter. When he’s not at Red Bird, he may be babysitting his one-year-old granddaughter, playing basketball, or grilling up some chicken for a family barbeque. Afterall, somebody’s gotta eat the chicken; who better than our own Red Bird family!

Meet Lloyd

Every butcher’s arsenal is well equipped with the right gadgets for cutting, trimming, filleting and sharpening. Lloyd Lister, at 11 years old, had his own arsenal of butcher’s gear: a milk crate and a knife without a tip. Standing at a mere 4’10”, the milk crate quickly became Lloyd’s ticket to watching every cut his father would make to beef, chicken, and pork. Unfortunately, when Lloyd picked up his own knife, the only select cut he would make was to his left index finger. Lloyd’s father, who wasn’t new to nicks and scars, came up with a quick solution; he clipped the knife tip with some tin shears, and little Little Lloyd Lister was in business.

Lloyd’s experience landed him a career in the meat industry as meat manager at Thriftway, in Seattle, Washington. For several years, he also served the Ketchikan, Alaska folk as head butcher at Sea Mart Grocery Store.

Kids and warmer weather brought Lloyd to Phoenix, Arizona where he started a job with Red Bird Farms. For Red Bird, Lloyd’s experience in the meat industry was priceless. As an added bonus, he’s so darn nice! Lloyd’s role as customer service rep was quickly changed to Meat Merchandiser as his personality secured this much more fitting role. Lloyd can be seen cruising about the greater Phoenix area in his Honda Element. You will know it’s him as the Red Bird logo is proudly stamped on the door; be sure to wave hello!
